“We thought today would be, well, fitting to start our new technology law series Know Your Rights, written by Engadget’s own totally punk copyright attorney Nilay Patel. In it we’ll try to answer some fundamental tech-law questions to help you stay out of trouble in this brave new world.”
Sleepy Geek? Spend less time on the Internet
People who spend time on the internet or watching television before they go to bed are more likely to FEEL like they don’t get enough sleep.
Is Internet Shopping Eco? The IMRG and their OLGAs
The IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group) recently held their OnLine Green Awards — the OLGAs, which were voted on by more than 9,000 shoppers and a panels of judges. You can see the finalists by downloading the PDF, but of more intrigue for us was not so much who won the gong, but the assertions made by the IMRG about the Green Effects of Internet Shopping. They sprout some impressive figures. Such as: “Efficient package delivery by van can replace inefficient personal driving to the shops; in the case of grocery shopping, this could reduce vehicle miles by a 70% or more.†Or less inventory because there is a “tendency towards ‘pre-selling’ online -…

The Perfect $ 100,000 House
Karrie Jacobs was founding editor of Dwell Magazine and knows her stuff. She also has an approachable, breezy writing style that is a joy to read. This book is the story of her quest to find the perfect $100,000 house “a great, cheap house, a place that I can afford, that satisfies my need for a home my taste for innovative design and and my desire for a more enlightened approach homebuilding.” It came out last summer; I wish I had not waited so long to read it.
It is a road trip; sort of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for the Dwell set. She crossed the country twice, met almost…

Ode Magazine
If you have been looking for a source of information for intelligent optimists then look no further. I have found the magazine to be inspirational and well informed.
It’s Not the Size …
Dwell Magazine has been drifting for a while, perhaps because of the change in editor last year. However it has found its legs this month and is back with a bang. The issue resonates with TreeHugger because it focuses on small homes under a thousand square feet, demonstrating that people can very happily live with less space if it is designed well. Gracing the cover is David and Im Shaefer’s 426 square foot loft (shown in TreeHugger eight months ago here); also included is Andre Lessard and Barbara Dewhirst’s Tour de Bebelles, shown…

Food for Thought: The Government Makes You Fat
Michael Pollan looks at the way Government policy determines what we eat and why “the most reliable predictor of obesity in America today is a person’s wealth.” He quotes a study by Drewnowski of the University of Washington, who determined that a dollar will buy 1200 calories of cookies or chips but only 250 calories of carrots. If you don’t have a lot of money, the most rational thing to do is buy junk food to get the most calories for your buck.
Why is a complex food like a Twinkie, with its 39 ingredients, processing, packaging and marketing so much cheaper than a bunch of carrots? Government subsidies and programs like the Farm…

Discovery Communications Announces New Network: PlanetGreen
It seems as though conscious living has found it’s place in television media.
We reported in February that the Discovery Health Channel was adding a new natural living show to their lineup. Now Discovery Communications is announcing something even bigger: they’re adding a whole new network. Called Discovery PlanetGreen, the network will be one-of-a-kind with 24-hour programming dedicated solely to living a green lifestyle. Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth, the 11-part mini-series event which started on March 25th, had an overwhelming response (if you’ve seen it you definitely know why) and clearly demonstrated the interest and passion that viewers have for our planet. “The Earth has been central to Discovery since John Hendricks first chose the planet to represent our brand,†said Chief…

New Study Proves EMF Affects Living Things, Discovers Electro-bonsai Effect
There has been much discussion at TreeHugger about the danger of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) generated by cellphones, routers, power lines and microwave ovens. Some people think it is a serious issue; WIFI is banned at Lakehead University, and in Scandinavia there are cellphone-free beaches for people with electro-hypersensitivity. Clarins even makes a spray to protect your skin from it. Other people feel that it is not a problem.
Treehugger Labs wanted to determine this once and for all, and has spent the past year studying the issue. We wanted to pick a life form that would not move around a lot so that we could ensure that there were…

The Future of Real Estate?
Why build high rises at all? Ten years from now, who is going to be working in them? Or living in them? Haven’t you people heard? Technology has made the city a relic, a thing of the past.
